The day that ended was day 63. Tomorrow will be day 64, no stopping it now. 69 is coming. 70 plus will follow. Austin, Texas is ruined.
We are at an eleven and a half inch rain deficit right now. Rivers have dried up in the Texas Hill Country. Some towns are worst than others. Some towns are pushing for their citizens to shower twice a week only. That would be Llano, Texas home of the great institution, Cooper's Barbeque. The Llano River has been dry for over a month.
The cactus in front of my house for the last five years has wilted away. Probably going to die. I ain't watering it. Makes no sense to me.
My therapeutic spot in nature, Gus Fruh in the Austin Greenbelt, has been bone dry for two years. In "Texan" that means my and my dog's waterhole has been dry for two years. Gus Fruh has been my hideaway since 1994. I have enjoyed it thoroughly every year until 2010.
Complete explanation will come on day 69 or 70.
1923, 2011 has your number.......

Today is day 69.
Today the temperature will be about 104. We will have five days over 100+ degrees following that. Tomorrow, Wednesday will be day 70. We will break the record for most 100 degree days in one year set in 1923. 70. I predict we hit at least eighty. The average high this week will be 104. No change in sight.
Last year was the hottest all-around year in recorded Austin history. We broke that record last month. We actually are tracking huricanes now, hoping they come our way. That is bad.
It has rained less than an inch in four months. The weather is only going to get worse I fear in the future.

The weather is fine up here, I think we're a bit above average rainfall for the 4th or 5th year in a row. Today it's in the 70s with a bit of a light breeze and some high altitude clouds. You're welcome to come up, enjoy our weather and try some of our local brews but you better be prepared to cook BBQ while here.

Okay it rained for, get this, after no rain in four months, for a whole ten to fifteen minutes, pushing it. More like ten minutes. I swear.
Wulf, I'll bring the beer.
I woke up yesterday figuring it would be a bad day. It was. Set a new record yesterday, 70 days of 100 degree weather in one year Today it was a cool 94-98, I dunno. Tomorrow and for at least another week, we'll be back to the hundreds. And business is dead.
Summer 2011, worst summer ever. Bring the rain already!

I hope it wasn't torn down. I want to move in before next summer finally brings me to my knees. I can't believe I worked an outside patio this summer without cracking. I got my vitamin D.
Wolf, I'll learn you to smoke an entire brisket, slowly over 16 hours, using only mesquite and hickory, the Texan way. You'll be able to carve it with a plastic spoon! Damn, we got good food down here.

We use apple wood and hickory for smoking up here. It is New England after all. You teach me Texas bbq and I'll teach you how to make the best NE clam chowdah you ever had. Oh and a traditional NE apple pie with cheddar cheese crust. We love dogs, I have a good size area fenced in for my guy, room for a few more so bring em with.

Day 72 and counting. 100s for the next seven days, and tomorrow will be the HOTTEST day this year, 109. Ug.
Thank you Wulf for the offer, especially the dog pack part. THAT means sooooo much to me.....
And you likewise have a place to visit to escape the cold when it comes. Your weather now, is our weather in the "winter". I've caught a toad on my porch in December before. We really get about a month or month and a half of colder weather, and only two really cold weeks in December happen every year. We get about a half inch of snow every other year or so.
And Wulf, what is your weekend forecast? Irene warnings?
Stay dry, and Cheers, you are a good man.

Oh, and I made one mistake. Not 1923 but 1925.
I'm trying to do research on the twenties here. There was a similar heatwave it seems between 1922-1926 or so. I'm a curious kind of person. I want to understand why if this is natural and let's say not man-caused, and what causes these spikes that last half a decade or so.
I say again, "Ug".

We're the same in summer as you are in winter temp. wise. A week or maybe 2 in the 90s and that's it, the rest is high 70's and 80's. Winter is another animal entirely. We're right in the path of Irene, it will track right over our house pretty much. I love me some hurricane though, there is just something about it. When I was younger I would be out hiking for something like this now I'll have to settle for watching it through a window or standing on the porch.
