Watched Absinthe a documentary from 2010 about the aformentioned drink which I found really interesting. It appears that like any other alcohol as long as it's made right it really isn't bad for you. Being one of the most popular drinks at the turn of the century it seems that members of the temperance movement and wine merchants in France teamed up to get rid of one of the most popular drinks. It was also interesting that it appears to have the effect of caffeine and gets people invigorated. Basically after a drunk killed his wife and kids they used it as a scapegoat to get rid of their common enemy.
It was an interesting documentary and a recomend. On a sidenote it's just another case of people trying to find a scapegoat instead of adressing actual issues just like comics in the 50's.

I tried some home made stuff once before working. Wormwood. Believe. The commercial stuff is not the stuff of yesteryear. The real stuff? Believe. One slug, and the night was very different and shall we say "darker" and more "sinister" feeling? Believe. The stuff on liquor stores' shelves is not the real thing. At homebrew shops you can buy that nefarious wood and make your own. Believe me, just believe. But don't ban it. It is a drink you have to approach with respect. Believe.
Just watched Suicide Club. Liked it very much, but where was the film's ending? C'mon!!!
And why did I understand that movie, except for its lack of resolution? I think I watched a lot of Japanese movies this year. Probably need to watch more. I, truthfully, am not a fan of J-Horror. At least not yet.
And the six girls (CRAP) and one boy grandchildren of mine are doing fine. Can you dig it?

Watched the original Japanese Pulse and really liked it. I found the American remake to be so bad that I avoided the original by the plague ,but I can definately say the original was much better. The only thing I liked more in the remake was the Red Tape Closet scene. I reccomend it ,but be warned it's a longer movie.

Watched Captain America, finally. Damn. Great flick. Gonna see The Avengers soon. Still have to see Thor. Now I'm excited.
Last night I watched Dark Ride a very good independent horror film. Kind of meta like Scream, but more serious, and grisly. But it did remind me just a bit of Scream and Behind the Mask. And a great swerve ending. I recommend if you are not looking for perfection, but a fun tale involving the cliches of horror, bad but good puns, and a carnival's murderous past.
Finishing off a Jester King and Mikkeller collaboration brewed here in Austin, Drink'In the Sunbelt Organic Wheat Beer (a farmhouse wild yeast lurks). Yum dammit and Cheers!

Watched the 2006 Australian version of Macbeth and was really dissapointed. The acting was bad, the fight scenes were bad, and Shakesperian language + Australian gansters doesn't mix. I really enjoyed Polanski's version which I thought was really well done and had been told that the last fight scene in this one was good so I was really looking forward to this one that didn't work. I did think the gore and soundtrack was good though.
I actually think it had good ideas though for example the idea of gangsters instead of warriors was interesting ,but man it just didn't work because of the Shakesperian language. Just because it's adapted from a Shakespeare play doesn't mean you have to keep the old stilted language you can change the wording so it's more fitting ,but still makes sense. I thought Polanski's version was able to get away with the language because it was set in older times so it seemed less out of place (even though people really haven't changed that much) and the fact that alot of it was them thinking to themselves.
In short I didn't like this movie.

I watched Fight Club fully from the beginning to end for the first time. Fight Club is a movie I've seen either a fourth or half of at various times and pieced together ,but this time was the first I actually watched it like it's meant to be. I have to say that I liked it alot more than the first few times I partially watched it. This is one of those movies where I came in at the end so the spoiler was ruined for me the first time. Overall I thought it was a really good movie.

Okay, I saw very few movies this month, and I can't believe how much I need to pop in a horror film right about now. It kinda reminds me of tacos.
My most recent ex and best friend for way too long (I have been contently single for five years, thank you very much) asked me when I would finally be sick of tacos. I had no idea what that question meant. It baffled me completely and left me tripping over my tongue trying to answer a question that had no logic behind it, to me. Too many tacos? What is that strings of words put together mean? I don't know. Sounded akin to, "Moon black paint eagle flies coconut". Made no sense. Just a string of chirps and whistles in an attempt to.... I dunno. I still don't.
I was born in Colombia, but I am very much a born-again Texan (got here before my second birthday), and was dubbed an honorary Mexican over fifteen years ago ("You're not Colombian. You're one of us. You are a Mexican". Been told that twice over the years. It is asolutly true, most people are convinced I am Mexican and that is a badge of honor to me. I FEEL more Mexican than Colombian). Tacos, like beer, are life staples to me.
Sick of tacos? What a stupid yet baffling question.
You don't know me my fellow peeps. Tacos are basic like air and water, maybe not daily, but if I could I would. You don't know the power of the Dark Side... oops, of tacos... Mexican Street (taco stand) tacos, barbacoa (BBQ beef) tacos, tacos from gas stations, pierna (pork leg) tacos, milanesa (flour breaded beefsteak) tacos, tacos from drive-thru windows, napolitos (cactus prickly pear) tacos, fancy-pants retaurant tacos, carne guisada (South Texas beef with mexican or Tex-Mex gravy) tacos, breakfast tacos, lengua (beef tongue) tacos, homemade tacos, egg and chorizo tacos, and of course the yankee standard, the basic but delicious egg and bacon taco with cheddar cheese. It does not get better than that, trust me, and I used to cook high fallutin' French food in a prior life. Tacos rule. 4 Life. Oh yeah they are, 2 Sweet.
So are horror movies. I'm watching one tonight. 'Cause like the mighty taco, I need one NOW. And that long rant? Jake, once again thank you for lighting a fire under my ass. I have not watched enough horror this month, but what an awesome year of competition it has been so far. Bring it, bring it, bring it, my brother. If you need, I have a thought, if not, YOU are in the driver's seat. What are we doing this month?
A Cheers! of a now empty 22 oz. bottle of Deschutes Black Butte 14th Anniversary (fuck that was a world class ale, shit goddammit, I tell you what) and the current bottle of Bridgeport Summer Squeeze I am drinkin' to you.
Back to topic. This month I watched puppies born, puppies open their eyes, puppies eating solid food (two days now and they are only three weeks old!), puppies seeking my feet out to chew on, it has been a lemon to lemonade month, and I am proudly a dork. Healthy little sumabitches they are! Stared at puppies for three weeks and two days like crack teevee if I wasn't working. Saw very few movies.
I watched Captain America for the first time. Man that movie made me happy.
I watched the original Hellraiser for the first time (like JAS with Fight Club, from one end to the other). Much better than I expected.
I watched a documentary called Herschell Gordon Lewis The Godfather of Gore. It was good stuff.
Otherwise I watched two or three movies I love like Robocop and rewatched the newer Hulk. Good stuff.
JAS, we will talk Fight Club soon my friend. I had a similar in a way, experience as you. Glad you popped that FC cherry. Everyone should watch Fight Club and V for Vendetta. Hey..... Who is knocking on my door this late at night....

I was kind of thinking that we could do movie's we'd never seen before ,but I'm willing to hear your idea , maybe I'll like it more.
On a sidenote when I was younger my family had 2 golden retrievers and the male was supposedly fixed and then one day while raining we saw a puppy moving outside so we brought in the mother and ended up with twelve puppies. Man it was awesome ,but it kind of makes me sad. Golden retrievers used to be pretty good dogs ,but now they either seem to have mental or physical problems due to overbreeding.
These competitions of ours have really invigorated my love for horror movies man. I've always been a fan ,but about a year ago I was like John and alot of other fans kind of burnt out and disillusioned with modern horror movies, but through these competitions I've seen alot of newer and older horror movies that I've ended up liking. It's really kind of brought back my love of horror.

Watched Arthur Penn's (director of the great Bonnie and Clyde) 1974 noir Night Moves starring Gene Hackman as a private eye who's personal life is discintegrating. It also stars James Woods and Melanie Griffith and has a whole bunch of other actors who faces or voices I recognize ,but can't place a name on. I was looking forward to this movie because I'd heard it was actually better than Bonnie and Clyde and while I thought this was a really good movie I thought Bonnie and Clyde was much better. The mainly jazz soundtrack was great and the additional music (rock and country) was as well, the cinematograhpy was great and what surprised me was how clear it looked. The gore was good to great, as was the acting. I thought the scenes of violence were well done and realistic. The main issue with the movie is it's weird pacing ,but otherwise there's nothing else really wrong with the movie. Hackman excels here particuarly when he gets angry, it's similar to how Steve McQueen could get to this ultra angry, realistic level of anger out of nowhere. The abrupt and violent ending was also great.
Don't want to give anything away if you do check this out, because it's a reccomend.

LOB upon your recommendation I decided to check out the masterpiece that is William Friedkin's 2011 drama/dark comedy Killer Joe. Everything about this movie was just so great: the comedy, acting, gore, violence, soundtrack, and cinematography.
Matthew McConaughey does a great job as the titular character I mean I always knew he was a good character ,but he does a great job as the sociopathic Joe, he does such a good job it's comparable to Javier Bardem as Anton Chigurah or Robert De Niro as Max Cady.
I wasn't expecting the movie to be how extreme it was ,but man am I glad I watched it.

The last movie I watched was Safety Not Guaranteed. www.imdb.com/title/tt1862079/?ref_=sr_1It's a bit of a chick flick that I watched with my girl. Even so, it was still pretty good. It had a great "Indy movie feel" to it for those of you who like that, like I do. Though it wasn't as good, I do say that it had a bit of a Napoleon Dynamite or Garden State feel to it if there's anyone out there who enjoyed those movies.

I watched District 9 last week and I have to recommend it.
It is about a new Apartheid in South Africa that begins with the arrival of a UFO full of starving and scared extraterrestrials. The humans of all creeds are "The Bohrs", and the aliens represent the oppressed native (in this case the ultimate illegal alien, but you get the idea). This was a fun watch with perfect CGI from Peter Jackson's effects people. This movie will make you think about how we are not really al that different from each other, including the ultimate illegal aliens.
I also recommend watching this one with the commentary track a second time.

District 9 was a great movie and I'm glad I saw it in the theater the first time. I remember reading a review that said it was a great movie and to go in knowing as little about it as possible so I did.
I loved how it had this realism, mixed in with the science fiction aspects and the transformation of an unlikeable character in to one you're rooting for. Also liked how it made me think the protagonist was going to die like three different times.
