I'm thinking more along the line of a horror movie you herd about where they said it was so shocking and terrifying you just had to go out and see. I think the two I can really think of that I bought without seeing are "Last house on the Left", and "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer". I just remembering hearing about them for years as being some of the most graphic "horror" films ever made.
There are scenes in both movies (mostly the rape scenes) that are unsettling to see but overall I just wish that I could of seen these films when they first came out to feel the real impact that people say they have.
What are some of the movies you guys have always herd about as being shocking and terrifying legends that you had to seek out?

I was always told I would love the original Hitcher. I finally sought it out in 2006, and it was the most fun I had with any movie, at home or at the theatre, all year long. Rutger Hauer essentially played Grand Theft Auto. Every time he showed up somewhere where he shouldn't have been or did something a human being shouldn't be capable of, I cackled like the wicked ****ing witch. Loved it, loved it, loved it.
Since then, I've been looking at Top-10 and Top-100 lists to build my own classics-to-see list. I've seen John Carpenters Fog, the original Black Christmas, the original Rear Window (which was amazing), Lost Boys, Near Dark, and a host of others. It's a lot of fun.
However, back when I was a kid the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th series were the taboo flicks. Every older boy had a hockey mask, plastic machete or one of those blade-gloves in October. They all talked about the awesome death scenes, or how these killers would love to carve up us kids. They had us dying to see the movies. The anticipation, in addition to my love of a villain winning, made those Jason flicks some of my favorites as a teen (obviously Jason is detained/killed at the end of most of them, but he's kicking ass until that point).

I had just recently watched Henry as well. I loved the movie myself, it might not be as shocking as it was at the time but it's a very well made movie and that always holds up. That brings me to Last House on the Left. This movie is only known because it is "shocking". I think it's a pretty poor movie though to be honest. I was not a fan of it. Cannibal Holocaust would be another I saw last years that I heard so much about. I don't think it's a bad movie, it is a good premise and is shot kind of cool like a documentary. Killing real animals is not my thing though. I guess I can't honestly say it isn't shocking since that isn't something you see often but it isn't something I want to watch, nor do I find that artistic. Anyone could just kill an animal and film it.

When it comes to last house on the left I saw it talked about on a documentary and they showed the "piss your pants scene" and I was intrigued so I bought it on Amazon. I will admit it's not a great made movie however I'm glad to have it as part of my collection because it was wes craven's first film and because "apparently" it was so revolutionary and shocking when it first came out. As for Cannibal Hollocaust I just recently saw it and although it was shocking (to be honest the animal deaths shocked me but I'm not as offended as others) but the part I really liked about the movie was how it twisted you on your head as to who was the real monster. i know it's debatable but I thought the end of "who is the real savages" was very insightful of the filmmakers.

There was a whole bunch of Video Nasties that I have wanted to see for a long time that where banned in the UK but over the last few years have became availible. The one film I have scene is Canninbal Holocaust which I believe is an amazing movie. The plot is simple. It is a film of two halves. The first half shows a scientist looking for a film crew who have gone missing. The second half shows the crews fate through the eyes of their actual footage. And what happens to the film crew is really disturbing and there was sections of the film that stayed with me for a while.
I also recently ordered the Toolbox Murders which was another Video Nasty which was banned but should be with me soon! ;D

Tobe Hooper's Toolbox Murders is much better than the original. I will thumb wrestle any naysayers.
I agree with Neal about Cannibal Holocaust. Stepping away from animal rights for only a second, three animals were killed in the movie. A turtle, a pig, and some kind of rodent like primate or something that screams in pain as it is snuffed on film. Only the pig added to the plot as it belonged to the villagers who would soon seek vengeance on the savage interlopers. The first two animal killings were just for shock and added zero to the plot. Now back to animal rights. I want to kick that sadist director's ass.
As a little kid, my oldest brother, the lame one, told me how he vomitted watching The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and how bloody it was. Fool. There is like a half-pint glass of blood in that movie, but it was considered one of the most disturbing movies ever for a couple of decades. I've watched that movie dozens of times since I was ten years old.
Night of the Living Dead was also infamously considered one of the most shocking movies ever, and it also was for a few decades.
Bride of Frankestein is another shocking film for its time. The special effects, especially the tiny humans, was top-notch, and one of the main characters was obviously gay, smart, and ready to turn socities mores on their ear. Classic.
Well in the last few years I have watched Teeth and The Human Caterpillar, both shocking in ways. I did like The Human Caterpillar. Hated Teeth, too preachy and man-bashing.
I will not watch A Serbian Story, ever.

I'm not a fan of the original Last House on the Left or Cannibal Holocaust. Last House is the better made film of the two, but I'm just not into mean spirited, cruelty abound type of films. I've never watched any of the Saw or Hostel films for that reason. Cannibal Holocaust just sucks all around, If given a choice I'd instead watch Cannibal Ferox any day of the week.

The term I use is torture porn for those horseshit flicks like Hostel and Saw. I watched both but I won't watch their sequels or others from the genre.
They lack in psychlogy, story, and usually also in character development. I love horror so I love blood and gore, but like in rasslin', they should be used to further the "angle" or plot. These movies use blood and gore as their plot vehicle and use zero real psychology. Just like Rob Zombie's Halloween remakes. Blood and gore and a nearly horror version of a fictional snuff film.
I might be sick and twisted, but I am too smart and dare I say classy to enjoy this sadist post-MTV attention-span shiite.
