Just finished watching John Carpenter's The Thing in HD, and am amazed at how well the movie still holds up as one of the great horror/suspense/sci-fi flicks. Basically a remake of Christian Nyby's 1951 The Thing From Another World, it also stands out as one occasion when, IMHO, the remake surpasses the original, not an easy feat. Can the board quote other remakes that outshone the originals, be it in the horror genre or not?
Thanks in advance.

Yeah love this movie. I think the first remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers is the best one.

You're not going to like this, but I like Rob Zombie's Halloween remake (unrated/extended version) better than John Carpenter's original. Blasphemy to many, but I'll take Malcolm McDowell over Donald Pleasence any day. The Grudge remake with Sarah Michelle Gellar is better than the original. Scarface with Al Pacino is definitely better than the original.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the American version of Funny Games, Tobe Hooper's The Toolbox Murders, Evil Dead 2, and The Fly.
I havn't seen Let Me In, but people say it is better than Let the Right One In which I loved.
