Yeah I loved the movie. I'm really happy Rourke won for best actor, I hope this leads to a wider release for the film.

I saw it in Harvard Square a few weeks back, loved every minute of it! Mickey Rourke won the golden globe, now he needs to win the Oscar!

I agree. Actually I was talking to Victor Miller in emails and found out he loved the movie too.

One thing's for sure: i bet the writer, Robert D. Siegel, saw "Beyond the Mat" before coming up with the script... He definitely took a page (a lot of them?) from Barry Blaustein's book, and that alone kinda bugs me, for making it look like a rip-off. Kinda reminds me of when people say that The Matrix's - and, let me make it clear, i love the movie - biggest plus is it's originality. That's total BS. The Matrix is basically "Ghost in the Shell" and "Welt am Draht" - a 1973 german TV-movie by Fassbinder, which centres on someone who comes to realise he's "living" in a computer-generated world... - put together. Was The Matrix exhilerating? No doubt. Original? No way. Maybe the same can be said of The Wrestler.

Tangent first, after Bram Stoker's Dracula, I won't watch Keanu Reeves' movies. Never saw The Matrix like I will never see Top Gun except in a Chinese gulag in twenty years.
Mickie Rourke should have won an Oscar, but non-fans don't realize that he caught Jake the Snake Roberts and others perfectly. Perfectly. I love The Wrestler. Saw it on the big screen.
Black Swan was another spin of the story The Wrestler tells. Saw that on the big screen. My gay friends (non-wrestling fans) kinda saw my point. Aranofsky agreed this was his intent.
One of those movies I love but hurt me, Requiem for a Dream. Saw it three times on the big screen and I own the dvd. First time I saw it, during the last few minutes I realized I was crushing my fingers because my hands were squeezing away. Second time I saw it, same scene, I felt like I had been punched in the stomach.
In the LOB Hall of Fame best actor/actress ever in any role in any movie ever goes to Elen Burstyn. Fuck the heroine junkies, her spiral was devastating to me. I tangented again. Did I err?
I've tried to watch the original The Wrestler. AWA kayfabe movie with Verne Gagne, Billy Robinson, The Crusher, the Bruiser, and I believe a non-credited appearance by a very young man named Ric Flair. Hard to watch. It sucks. Never drunk or high enough to make it more than forty minutes into it. I will watch it all one day.
