I was thinking about it, and decided to ask: what's the definition of a horror movie? Is it the scares? is it the blood? is it a monster? In fact, is there even a definition for a horror movie? I know that once we watch one, we'll be able to say if it's a horror movie or not, but what, in essence, defines one? For instance: "Alien". Is it a horror flick? Or simply a sci-fi thriller?

Pretty much any movie that has scenes that are supposed to be "scary" rather than just "suspenseful". Though there is often a thin line between a thriller with a murderer and a horror movie with a killer.
Also, optionally, any movie that attemps the "scary" style of a horror movie, but from a tongue in cheek or silly standpoint. Most straight to video horror movies are more like comedies, but they still fall under horror due to the style.
Or something.

I read the Horror Movie entry on Wikipedia. Good read that I recommend in answering this broad question.
