This year we're going to see the release of two films with extremely similar premises: Cell and The Signal. Cell is an adaptation of Stephen King's recent novel, about a signal that goes out over every cell phone, turning all who listen to it into raving, violent sociopaths, and follows a few survivors who hope to find safety (and one character's son). The Signal is about a transmission that goes out over every medium, primarily television, causing all (or most people) who see it to turn into raging, violent sociopaths, and tells three stories of different survivors/groups of survivors. Cell actually follows the "phone crazies" development, become more complex mentally and socially over time, while Signal plays with the more zombie-esque premise. Despite this, there's a lot of conflict on the net already that one source must have ripped off the other. This site did a neat little analysis on the origins of the similar idea: www.accessatlanta.com/news/content/movies/stories/2008/02/14/Signalside_0217.html

I haven't read either but I would like to before the movies come out, or after I see the movies.
