My two favorites are Stephen King's Desperation and J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. Those two are more responsible for why I write and the way I write than anything else. Love to lose myself in them.
For pure horror, I always go for Stephen King's short stories. "The Boogeyman" and "Jerusalem's Lot" absolutely ruled.

Great choices guys! I'd be remiss if I didn't include ,Pigeons From Hell by Robert E Howard, Shadow Over Innsmouth by H. P. Lovecraft ,The whole run of The Dark Tower by King and my main man Harlan Ellison's The Whimper Of Whipped Dogs.

Can't forget anything by E.A. Poe. You can't beat things like Tell Tale Heart.

I'm no fan of Koontz but he's H.P. Lovecraft and Poe combined compared to Poppy Z Brite. That gal couldn't write her way out of wet tissue paper.

If anyone's looking for brilliant, inspired and laugh out loud fantasy, pick up some Terry Pratchett. The Discworld own my humorous side.
