Almost all King books do it for me (minus Tommyknockers and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon), along with Matheson. For pure horror, I always go for Stephen King's short stories. "The Boogeyman" and "Jerusalem's Lot" absolutely ruled. I totally agree with the Boogeyman--that was the creepiest short story I have ever read, hands down. The end is the best...hits you with such a wallop...

If anyone's looking for brilliant, inspired and laugh out loud fantasy, pick up some Terry Pratchett. The Discworld own my humorous side. I second the love of Pratchett. It's very simple prose that can be buzzed through in a couple of days, but it's still wonderfully clever and creative. Try out Mort, about Death's apprentice, who learns the ropes while Death gets some time off to find out what's so good about life. That's should be a happy medium between horror-heads and fantasy-heads.

Somebody tell Neal that we want Terry as a guest! Only if we start a "Laugh Your Head" Off board...nothing particularly frightening about Pratchett's stuff...unless you fall into the Ankh River....

i gotta agree with TJ on this one, I Am Legend by Mathison is truly one of my all time favorites, i also like The Tomb by F Paul Wilson, a guest on WYH, check out the interview. With I Am Legend coming out. I bought The Omega Man. Rather enjoyed it. Quite grim but still good. Thinking next of reading the book. Seeing the comments. I think I go buy the book. Cool! Some of my favourite books are Herbert Van Thal Horror Anthologies(some great covers as well), Moon by James Herbert, The Beach by Alex Garland and a more.

When you start reading Matheson, you'll be amazed how many of his stories you already know. He's had dozens of his stories brought to tv and film.

My sister read those scary story books to me when I was a kid. The ones where the cover had a picture painted in black, white, red, and blue; and there was some reference to the story as the cover pick. I could never sleep, they scared the hell out of me, I don't even know why. They still haunt me today. I can only imagine myself if that hadn't haunted my childhood....... gosh.... I woulda been a fag....... But now I'm awesome.

My friends husband who thought movies or tv shows could not affect a kids mind let his 4 year old daughter watch Stephen King's IT. They had to redecorate her room as she had clown wallpaper. Forget the circus as well.. she had a fit at that.
