What is/was your favorite place to rent horror movies? I was just thinking about how when I was a kid before Blockbuster rolled into town I use to love going up to the local video store and just passing through the horror section and looking at all VHS cover boxes...they had so much stuff that I usually got my brother to rent and really helped build my love of horror movies. Way better selection than typical chain video stores. I miss independant video stores.
This place also had a huge wrestling VHS rental section. Remember the days when you had to wait 2 montsh to rent a wrestling PPV if you didn't have satelite?

I hate Blockbusters, they put all the small video stores out of business. I used to go my local one Video Carousel, which was owned by a local family. I went to school with and graduated with their son Jason. Once Blockbuster came in they closed.
Now I use Netflix, and sometimes Red Box.

I use to work at a blockbuster so I'm totally cool with hating that place! Not only do they put out small business but they also enforce their own form of censorship because they classify themselves as a "family" company.
In Halifax, NS though someone has managed to open their own chain (about 3-5 stores) of vidoe rental places called Video Difference...still though I do miss the old mom and pop (for the lack of better term) video stores.

When Troy's gf worked there I think they had a policy where men couldn't have their hair past their shoulders. Yeah they even have a ban on Last Temptation of Christ.

There's this place about 40 minutes from my house called "Video Shack" Just tons, and tons of old horror VHS tapes. I just got "Black Roses" about a demon rock band named Black Roses that turns kids in a small town into satanists. It has Vincent "Big Pussy" Pastore in his first film role. He gets eaten by a speaker playing a Black Roses song.

Redbox stocks a lot of horror movies, it's all new releases though.

Our first VCR was a betamax. In 1983 or 1984 we paid $50 to be allowed to rent movies from the first video rental store in El Paso, Movie Madness, long since put out of business by Blockbuster Video.
In upstate New York I rented from a pizza place in the middle of nowhere in the woods, Video Shop Pizza in Staatsburg. What an original name, but typical of upstate New York which is laaaaame and more backwards than any major city in the South or any small town in Texas.
I now am addicted to buying DVDs, and ebay is my place after reading reviews on DreadCentral or BloodyDisgusting.com, or even Wikiapedia.
When renting movies in town (Austin, TX) I only rent from I Love Video or Vulcan Video. Great institutions that I hope outlive all this Netflix zaniness. Support local businesses people, don't be so lazy! But, I do love that Netflix has almost completely killed off Blockbuster. Blockbuster is the Starbucks of video.

Now I use netflix and love all the movies you can stream.
I used to go to a local place that would have all these themed models depending on the genre you were in. For example: in the war section they had a fullscale WW2 battle going on, for Sci Fi they had a giant space battle, for horro they had this evil castle with all these monsters and demons that even had a floating moon it was awesome. Plus I remember they had a huge selection and not just horror movies. I remember how basically me and/or my cousins would pick horror movies based off of how the covers looked lol. They'd also have these special deal like depending on how good your grades were on report cards you could get free rentals and food. Then they got bought out by Video City which became Movie Gallery which then got bought out by Blockbuster. Honestly it was never as good after that and I'm actually kind of happy that Netflix has been destroying them almost as if everything came full circle.
