John Carpenter is my favorite horror director, and i was wondering if, in an upcoming show, the hosts (and callers...) could dwell into which is their favorite Carpenter flick, and why - and there's definitely a lot to choose from. I think this hasn't been debated yet - i've heard the entire archive and i don't recall it happening -, and maybe it would be an interesting discussion. Myself, i love Escape from New York (not a horror flick, though, same thing with Big Trouble in Little China, a cult classic IMHO), but Halloween and The Fog (not forgeting the grossly underrated and frequently overlooked Christine ...) literally scared the crap outta me when i first saw them. Also, the fact that he produced so many classics with limited budgets is, i believe, proof of his talent and vision.
Thanks.

He's apparently working on a new film at the moment, The Ward. It'll be great to see a John Carpenter film at the cinema again.

I've got this movie called Dark Star from 1974. I haven't watched it yet, but I think it's one of Carpenter's first films and it's supposed to be a totally generic D-list movie. The movie is a sci-fi space flick and I luv those types of movies, so I had to pick up a copy. I popped it in one day and the dvd starts with star wars-like words floating into outer space. These words were added specifically to the dvd, and were never in the original movie that bombed in theaters. Anyways, the words are wrote by one of the producers saying how when the movie was released in 1974, he and Carpenter went around town to get the audience reaction. They went to some theater in NYC, and the ticket guy says 'what audience?"
He said there were about 5 people in the theater, and all of them were confused as to what they were watching. He said these people were expecting a star wars-like action/drama, but what they got was a movie called Dark Star, which was supposed to be a space comedy. The producer says the only problem was that no one was laughing. He said "well, if we can't make 'em laugh, let's scare them" -and this movie Dark Star became the inspiration for Ridley Scott's Alien.
Once I read this opening sequence, I stopped the movie cause I too was expecting an action/drama, so it being a D-list comedy I'll wait to watch it on some boring friday night when I have a whole lotta weed and not much else to do.

I watched that movie Dark Star last weekend, and that 'forward' in the opening sequence of the movie was written by none other than Dan O'Bannon of the 'Living Dead' fame. That was his and John Carpenter's first movie. It was really cheesey, but you can totally see the 'alien' inspiration from it. In 'Dark Star', the alien is a beachball with legs and shit. totally retarded haha! O'Bannon's opening forward also mentions that at some scene in the movie, one of the actors is under the influence of LSD! As I watched, there were about 5 or 6 scenes where I'm all "oh, this is it, that guy is trippin' balls'!
RIP Dan O'Bannon

I think I saw Dark Star in of all places a beach-side hotel in Ixtapa, Mexico when I was maybe seven years old. If it was the same movie I only remember a space pilot with a cowboy hat? ? It was awful. Reading all the above, I had no idea that I have missed so many of Carpenter's films, and I regularly cite him as one of my favorite directors. My favorites are The Thing, Halloween, Big Trouble, Escape from New York, and of course They Live. I also love his whole Apocalypse Trilogy especially In the Mouth of Madness. But you gotta love Alice Cooper in Prince of Darkness.
