What does everyone think about this ? I think the special effects look good, but I can't get past new people playing the classic cast. How can anyone else but Shatner and Nimoy play Kirk and Spock ?
Also I read JJ Abrams say he didn't make this movie for the Star Trek fans. That seems really arrogant, that's one of the most loyal fanbases around.

I must be an exception because i'm both a great Star Wars and Star Trek fan (The Next Generation series has some of the most well-written TV scripts EVER, all TV shows and genres included), but i've seen the trailer and consider this a radical cut with the past. The Star Trek movies with the TNG crew weren't that good (IMHO, ofcourse), so to keep the franchise a money-maker - thus ensuring it's survival - JJ Abrams opted for a (very?) different attitude towards both the series, and its characters. Will it strike a chord with the always faithful - but perhaps too "conservative" - fanbase, or will it simply alienate them? The most important question, however, is if it will attract a NEW audience, unconditioned by previous viewing of the numerous TV series, which hopefully will embrace the characters. Star Trek was always a "thinking-man" sort of sci-fi, and therein laid its appeal to me, and surely to countless others. That format and philosophy , however, seems to work better on TV than on the big-screen. This new film appears to bet everything on providing a blockbuster-like action-entertainment experience, and will no doubt "offend" the purists. The box-office will, in the end, prove if it was a success or not, regardless of whether or not it pays hommage to cinematic masterpieces like the original ST movie, The Wrath of Kahn, or the original series and its excellent sequel, ST: TNG.

I'm fan of both Star Wars and Star Trek. I really just don't think the movie looks good. It's hard to get someone else to play such iconic roles, and it forces you to compare them. Whenever I see the ads I just think Spock looks so bad.

It will be hard, for those embedded with the iconic images of Shatner and Nimoy, to overlook that fact, but i guess Abrams is counting on a new generation of fans embracing it. If someone hasn't been "imprinted" with the idea of Shatner and Nimoy "being" Kirk and Spock, it will certainly be easier to achieve that goal. But, no doubt, it will be a hard-sell on true Trekkies. I guess it would be the same if Lucas "remade" SW and gave Harrison Ford's part to a different actor - something of a blasphemy, for sure. Would prefer a new Trek TV series to this movie, though - The Next Generation is just superb, something along those lines would be nice.

I agree, a new tv series would be great, I enjoyed Enterprise in spite of not being much of a Scott Backula fan. I liked the more gritty, "early days of the federation" feel and getting the chance to see some of the figures that became notable in the lore, like Zephram Cockran, while they were still "alive".

Yeah, i never could get into Bakula as captain, for some reason. Still a good series, but not to the level of TNG or DS9, also one of my favorites.

I hated the old Star Trek show, but its movies were really good. I loved the one with the whales.
I couldn't give a crap about somebody else playing the Kirk role. Re-makes have already re-cast many roles that were dear to me. Just because Shatner's awful acting made Kirk famous doesn't make this special to me. And I think Leonard Nimoy has made enough of a stink over disliking the Spock role (published multiple books about it!) that there's nothing sacred left in that. As far as I'm concerned we're in full re-make culture now, which means you can only hope they cast somebody good in the old roles.
However, the trailer for this looks like utter trash. In two minutes they promise an angsty young Kirk, and angsty polarized Spock, them getting in a fist fight, a whole bunch of explosions, and the promise that Kirk will fuck Uhura. It's full of the most base, cliche crap. Top that off with the trailer (however small a representation of the whole film it might be) not convincing me that any of these actors will be worth watching in their roles seals the deal. I'm a big fan of Bad Robot's other stuff (Cloverfield, Lost), but somebody will have to twist my arm to get me to go.

I'm a Star Wars fan.
I do like the original Star Trek series and TNG as well as Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
That said, I loved this movie, the plot was plausible in making this a type of continuation and new beginning both at once, not just a remake or reboot. Like Riren wrote, this is a culture of remakes now, there are no more sacred cows. This was handled very intelligently in my opinion.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I think this Star Trek remake is one of the best sci-fi films ever, up there with 2001 and Sunshine. I even liked it better than the whole Star Wars Prequel Trilogy and Return of the Jedi.
