burned to dvd last night, gonna screen it again probably tonight. Haven't seen it since I was a kid, and don't remember getting overly excited about it back then but there is something about this movie where I've had thoughts in my head about it over the years and I think it falls into the '80s cult classic category so I'm gonna check it out again for nostalgia reasons! Tim Robbins is in it and I had no idea so that should be interesting...

It's considered one of the worst movies ever but I always kinda liked it

When I was a kid I broke my leg and was in the hospital for a month with my leg pinned together in a sling and the only 2 movies the hospital had to watch was Howard the Duck and Top Gun. So I watched those movies on end and basiclly know them by heart.

so, watched it over the weekend and here's the thing about Howard the Duck...it's at a weird crossroads where you'd think that kids would love it, being that it's about a 3 foot tall duck, but the humor is way more adult oriented, and yet the movie can't seem to find a happy medium between the two. I guess the movie is aimed at comedy for young adults, but as an adult it's just really weird comedy to accept coming from a talking duck I guess.
I did enjoy it more this go-around as an adult, and can understand that when I saw it as a kid I was way too young to get the jokes, and probably wanted more of a kid-themed adventure with the duck. They made some 'illegal alien' & 'terrorist hijacking' jokes in the movie, which I found interesting with what is going on in today's news. I also thought it was funny how Howard lands on earth in Cleveland, and he's not even there 5 minutes and already realizes that he landed in a shithole.
I had no idea that Howard was a marvel comics character, and that George Luca's played a part in bringing him to the screen. Also, I noticed that Celeb Apprentice hottie Holly Robinson Peete played a role as one of the rocker girls. I had no idea who Holly Robinson was until I saw the Celeb Apprentice, so it's a good example of how that show puts people over in the pop culture world.
Lea Thompson has the starring role, and I tell ya, back in the day I always had a thing for her. Which is weird, cause she's really nothing that special, kinda the everyday girl, but man, mark her down as a total hottie in my book. Which always creeps me out cause I watch back to the future and she plays the mom and I think, "man, if that chick was my mom I'd..." and I tell myself that I'd still hook her up with my dad if I was back in time.
Good to see the principal from Ferris Bueller in the movie. Seeing that guy in stuff just always sparks up that '80s nostalgia. I was looking for some early glimpses of Shawshank-esque brilliance from Tim Robbins, like "oh yeah, it's easy to tell that this guy is gonna be a great actor" if you were to see this movie back when it came out, but Robbins mainly plays the quirky over-the-top scientist all thru the movie.
The punk rock scenes in the movie made me think I was sure glad that I wasn't old enough to be a part of that scene with everybody having crazy hair and all dressed in crazy outfits trying their best to look as much like The Cure as possible. I really like the "howard the duck" theme song for the movie, it's really catchy and even a couple days later I still have it in my head.
All in all, probably best to shelve the movie for another 20 years before the next screening. One of the worst movies ever made? -I can see a valid arguement for that, but then again, anybody ever see Leonard Part 6 starring Bill Cosby? That movie makes Howard the Duck look like freakin' Godfather Pt 2...and guess what, Leonard is next on my '80s nostalgia list!

you know, I watched Burton's Ed Wood like 3 different times before becoming aware that there actually was a real life Ed Wood? I had no idea. I want to get my hands on some of his stuff just for shits and giggles.

I thought it was pretty lame. Yeah it wasn't very good, that's how I saw it. They had Spider Baby on the list, it's a good movie.

yea spider baby is great. It just looked like they hated sci-fi films from the 50s and 60s. Thats not too fair.

For the record, I am now the proud owner of Leonard Part 6! I saw it in the theater as a kid, and picked it up a couple weeks ago, watched it again...and man...is it fucking cheesy hell yeah it is! -but I put it in the category of 'it's so bad it's good', that I have to own it. As I was watching it recently, it made me wonder how any actor could read such a ridiculous script and be all "yeah, I'm in, let's do this!"

Okay, I'm skipping that documentary.
I have never seen Leonard, Part 6, but i always have wanted to, and still do.
I have seen Plan 9 a dozen times. I even love Dance of the Dead, Nasty Neal, after your experience with those ghoulish vamps, YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS MOVIE. Ed Wood directing pole-dancers in a graveyard. Good times, great sixties big real boobies!
Spider Baby is a good movie, it should never have made this list!
I loved Howard the Duck as a kid and watched the first third last night and all the documentaries today. Good times. They show Duck nipples and a duck condom in the first ten minutes. I can't believe my mom watched it with me on the big screen and didn't say anything. She was a cool lady.
Boo list! Boo!

I was just thinking, I don't know why, but I'm glad ducks don't have nipples. Bizarre mental pictures I get from time-to-time, I'll tell ya what....

I can neither confirm nor deny (cause I've never seen whichever one it is), but I heard that the bat suit that Val Kilmer or George Clooney wore had nipples. Something just seems so, so wrong about that. If it's true and there was indeed a Batman running around Gotham with nipples erecting through the kevlar, then all I can say is I always knew there was a reason I quit the series after Burton, and didn't pick up again till Nolan.

I didn't see it either so I'm guessing it was the one with old Arnie playing Mr. Freeze. Ditto on the Nolan note.
