personally I like the horla by, guy de maupassant . the main character thinks he is being stalked by an invisable being . it is written apparently as the author is going insane thanks to theend stages of syphilis . i always wondered how much that affected the writing and plot of the story

The Dream Quest of Unknown Kaddath by H.P. Lovecraft. I love this story and though there are Lovecraft tales I like more this was the first one I read as a kid that came to me in a box of assorted horror and fantasy books from my Uncle. It got me hooked on H.P. and horror reading in general and so will always hold a place of reverence to me.

Honestly, I skip reading fiction most of the time, if you can believe that. I read a lot about Nixonian politics/post-Truman America, current events/politics, and about the American Civil War. I could pick many horror stories that have captivated me from these sources ranging from Andersonville Prison to John Brown's hijinks (Yay! John Brown, I heart ya, ya crazy dead old loon, thank you and a thousand Cheers!!!). Or Bob Haldemann's autobiography where he speculates on the meaning of certain codewords Nixon would use to try to obstruct early federal investigations into that little break-in and how they tie-in with an assasination from November of 1963. Many horror stories, true and fiction, in that can of worms, but very scary to me after readinf Haldemann's own words.
Or G. Gordon Liddy's autobiography. That man is terrifying to me, 83 years old or whatever. I fear him until the day he dies, and then he should be inspected by a bomb-squad before a coroner in my opinion.
But like usual I digress.
One more. The horror I can picture from that battle about seven years back where our Marines had a 20 hour firefight with Al-Sadar's Shiite fanatics/"freedom fighters" backed by Iran in a cemetary in Iraq. Night and day in the heat and the dust, and close-quarters combat via night-vision. That could be a chilling and bloody movie right there.
My childhood favorite horror short was "The Hook" in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark or More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, those 1980s grade school horror story/urban tales collections. I loved those books. I gave the complete collection to my neices, and my sister-in-law returned the book to me a month later. She creeps out sooo easily. Oh well, I love her anyway.

I stopped reading non-fiction and current events because it makes me hate humanity and I'm trying to get away from that. I like early American history though, like how Abraham Lincoln hunted Vampires.
